Thesis Summary

Microplastic (MP) and tire wear particle (TWP) pollution is a growing environmental concern. However, little is still known about TWPs.

This PhD project aims to validate existing analytical methods for monitoring and reduce uncertainties in sampling strategies in the marine environment, while also mapping TWP distribution across the Danish landscapes.

The study quantified MP and TWP concentrations in various matrices, such as wastewater, sediments, and road dust. It also assessed the reliability of PyGC/MS as an analytical method for MP and TWP detection, demonstrating its accuracy and minimal matrix interference. Furthermore, the research explored spatial variability in contamination, revealing significant differences between urban and rural sites, and evaluated the role of stormwater ponds in mitigating TWP pollution. The findings highlight the importance of tailored sampling strategies and underscore the need for standardized monitoring protocols to better assess the environmental impacts of MPs and TWPs. These insights contribute to the broader understanding of microplastic pollution.
